If you ever find yourself stuck in a bubble of overwhelming anxiety, here are a few quick tips to help find your way out. Remember, anxiety always passes, the key is to make yourself as comfortable as possible so its visit can be even shorter.
1. breathe – I know it’s easier said than done, but take several slow, deep breaths to change your physical state. This will slow your rapid heart-rate and racing thoughts.
2. think happy thoughts – Close your eyes and imagine yourself in the place you are happiest. Use all your senses, what does it look, smell, sound, taste and feel like?
3. challenge your anxiety – Identify and verbalize exactly what you’re anxious about, and ask yourself what is the worst thing that can happen, and is that really so bad. Chances are your anxiety is greater than the situation warrants.
4. distract yourself – Talk to a friend, listen to music, or play a game on your phone. When anxiety strikes, combat it by doing or thinking about something completely different.
To help avoid anxiety altogether, make sure you’re practicing these steps on a regular basis, even if you feel okay!
