It’s February… we get it. You can’t go to the grocery store, gas station, or even turn on the tv without being reminded that Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and that you better not mess it up this year! You might be surprised to hear that I’m actually not a fan of V-Day. My theory has always been that if you need one day to celebrate your relationship, it shouldn’t be the same day as everyone else. Worst of all, studies suggest most breakups happen after Valentine’s than during any other time of year (stay tuned for more on this)! This shouldn’t come as a shocker, it’s easy to start comparing your relationship to others around you when the standards are set so high and the competition is on display. When you start crossing the line from fun to pressure, you know something’s gone awry.
Do your relationship a favor and ditch Valentine’s Day this year.
Make your special day the day or the week before, it will be more personal, and your waiter won’t be rushing you to finish the chocolate soufflé. And if you’re not quite ready for that, have a Valentine’s night in and make dinner together. Don’t have expectations, or compare your relationship and parter to anyone else’s – you never really know what their relationship is like – trust me. If you’re in a happy relationship, believe me when I say that that’s more important than any heart-shaped diamond necklace.
Most importantly, please don’t believe the propaganda.
If your partner makes you happier than anything else in the world on any given day and forgets to make reservations next Thursday, cut them some slack. Lingerie and candy don’t mean love. Only love means love.
