I’ve gotta admit that I was pretty quick to jump on the coconut water bandwagon early on and it doesn’t look like I’m getting off anytime soon, for lots of reasons. For one, water can get boring! I don’t drink soda so this offers some variety. I like to do a cycle class a couple of mornings a week, and they tend to leave me pretty dehydrated and drained for the rest of the day, and I’ve found that coconut water replenishes the lost water, and electrolytes, better than regular H2O. It also fuels muscles and prevent muscle cramps – as an added benefit, I also feel like it keeps my energy up all day.
Speaking of electrolytes, coconut water is packed with potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium, and phosphorus – everything you need to put back into your body after a workout. I also like that it’s natural, created inside a coconut instead of a lab (like those neon sports drinks).
So why are electrolytes important? Because they facilitate nervous system functioning and nerve transmission, of course! I like to keep thinks as natural as possible, but sometimes I need a boost of energy when I’m working long hours, so I like this all-natural alternative to caffeine or an energy drink!
Hydration, energy, and better cognitive functioning are just some of the benefits of coconut water, but they are reason enough to ditch the bottle for the box whenever possible!
