The first year of marriage is often considered the “honeymoon” phase, full of butterflies and romance, when people are blissful and extremely in love. Right? Wrong, a new Australian study says. They found that couples in their first year of marriage were less satisfied than couples during any other year in their marriage. The study suggests this is due to a “wedding hangover”- couple’s get really excited planning for the best day of their lives and then come back to reality.
Good news: by the second year, couples’ levels of happiness increased, and climbed over time. Their levels of happiness, on average, is greater than single, widowed, or divorced individuals.
The happiest couples in the study? Those who were married for 40 years!
The lesson of the day: to persevere. It takes time to get used to being married and working out all the quirks of your marriage. Hang in there and give it the best shot you can, you’ll be reaping the rewards in no time!
